ECCHA Hires First On-Staff Veterinarian

Introducing Dr. Amber Gooden: ECCHA’s First On-Staff Veterinarian

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Gooden to The Eau Claire Community Humane Association (ECCHA.) Her journey to our team is a testament to her unwavering dedication to animal welfare and medicine. Growing up in Eau Claire, Dr. Gooden’s passion for animals was evident from a young age, setting the stage for her career in veterinary medicine.

Background and Early Career

Dr. Gooden’s story begins in Eau Claire, where she grew up in the community of the Chippewa Valley. This environment nurtured her love for animals, leading her to start working at The Ark Animal Hospital at the young age of 16. Balancing school and work, she continued her journey at The Ark through her undergraduate years at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC).

In 2014, Dr. Gooden graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine (UW-SVM). Eager to make a difference, she joined the Eau Claire Animal Hospital immediately after graduation, where she honed her skills and deepened her commitment to animal health for nearly a decade. In 2023, Dr. Gooden embarked on a new chapter, joining Riverview Animal Hospital. In July 2024, Dr. Gooden expanded her horizons by starting relief work at Allied Emergency Vet. This new role allows her to provide critical care and support to animals in urgent need, further showcasing her versatility and dedication to the field.

A Lifelong Commitment to Shelter Medicine

Shelter medicine has always held a special place in Dr. Gooden’s heart. During her undergraduate years, she actively fostered a variety of animals for the local humane society. Dr. Gooden also said she cherished her time as the “Vet of the Month” at ECCHA. These experiences shaped her career and instilled a deep sense of purpose in helping homeless animals in need.

Today, Dr. Gooden’s home is a testament to her commitment to rescuing and caring for animals. She shares her life with four dogs, seven indoor cats, three outdoor barn cats, and a fish. Each pet has a unique rescue story as they are all from shelters. Some came from her time as “Vet of the Month,” being surrendered to her clinic, and other rescue stories. In addition, she is currently fostering a dog from ECCHA and welcomed a foster kitten into her home after just one day at ECCHA!

Special Interests and Hobbies

Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Gooden has a keen interest in animal behavior and mental health. She believes in a holistic approach to veterinary care, ensuring that each animal’s emotional well-being is as important as their physical health.

In her spare time, Dr. Gooden enjoys training and hiking with her dogs, spending quality time with her cats, and tending to over 100 house plants. She also spends her free time with family, who fortunately all live in the Chippewa Valley. Reading and continuous learning are also passions she pursues, further enriching her knowledge and expertise.

We are incredibly excited to have such a passionate and experienced veterinarian join our team. Dr. Gooden’s journey from a young animal lover in Eau Claire to a dedicated professional at multiple locations is truly inspiring. We look forward to the positive impact she will undoubtedly make on our community and the lives of the animals we all cherish.
